Surprised? Not Really...

Lance Bass of `N Sync reveals he's gay

I'm not judging by any means. I'm just saying I'm not surprised. I think I'd be more surprised if he was the only one...

The details are quite interesting, actually. He's dating Reichen Lehmkuhl, the guy who won season four of CBS' "Amazing Race."

Even more odd is that he and Joey Fatone are developing a sitcom pilot inspired by the "The Odd Couple." Bass is going to play a gay character.

It's almost like he waited to come out until it would help his career. Like he was holding onto that bit of trivia until he was ready to relaunch himself into the public eye. It wouldn't surprise me if the same people who manufactured 'N Sync are still handling his career, telling him when it was a good move to come out.

Well good for Lance...big surprise...the guy's name is Lance for Christ's Sake!!!!

I'm sure he'll be openly welcomed into the wild and this will, as you implied, assure the temporary appearance of their tv show...can't wait for it to bomb...when he crawls away he'll at least have the "Fat One" to cover his retreat.

you're probably right, but I am happy when anyone comes out for any reason.

It sounds terribly cynical to agree with you, but I can't say as I don't. It's very likely. But Rain is probably right as well, whatever helps.

If more celebrities do it, then it may be easier and more acceptable for struggling young people to come out as well.

I hate to be a cynic about it, because you guys are right. The more openly gay celebrities there are, the easier it will be for those who are struggling aginst societal prejudice to be open.

Actually, the real benchmark will be when we see openly gay professional athletes.

I felt like ranting...(quitting smoking is making me cranky)...
Although I can be critical, I never like to knock on anybody's creative endeavors, but this project has some major odds against.
As for Mr. Bass's sexuality, can't help but feel that it's being played for publicity...but I agree, it is good that he's out.

Nobody got the "FatOne" reference from Robot Chicken? Or nobody wanted to go there? This is still 'N Sync we're talking about here, right?

Peope who "manufacture" and/or "handle" ... eh, it just bugs me that they exist. What's real anymore, you know? What's coming from the heart? Is any musician not handled, manufactured, created? Is anyone just who they are?

Am I the only one who feels this way?

I got the "Fat One" reference, ST. It was a good one.

I think that popular music has become such a big business that today's pop stars are manufactured, packaged and sold just like any other product. Independent music, for the most part, hasn't hit that point yet, but big record labels are spending so much money on their bands that they need a target demographic to market their bands to.

In the old days, they simply sought out radio airtime, now they send press kits to anyone who'll take them, telling them exactly what to think about this band and how to market them to the public. Then they create photo ops and publicity opportunities. It's all about the business, not the music.
