Dreaming Of Venice

Venice

It's been several months since our Italy trip, bit I still dream of Venice almost every night. When I'm asleep, I'm wandering the tiny streets, walking over canals, sitting outside wine bars and findig restaurants in dark alleys. I'm running breathlessly over bridges with my friends, all of us drunk on wine and wearing elaborate masquerade masks, and there is this wonderful pervading feeling of restless exhaustion, moving for the simple sake of the joy of movement, no matter how long previously I've been moving, no matter how tired I am, just because moving feels too good to stop.

I smiled to myself when I was at Trader Joe's last. They sell a frozen torte dessert called "Dreaming of Venice". I didn't pick it up; we don't do sweets at our house, but I hope the concoctor (Is that a word? You know, meaning "one who concocts"?) behind this treat took a similar trip to mine and suffers the same affliction, where they wake up each morning and can't get that city out of their head.

No sweets? EVER? You're funnin' me, aren't you? Givin' an old lady a hard time for being such a food nazi, aren't you? I got your number!!!

I've been working like a dog all month trying to perfect the wholesomest, high fiber, omega-3 & calcium enriched cookie ever! I keep making these little half batches of experimental cookies and setting them onto the counter to cool. (I do this on Friday, after dinner, while my girlfriends are out partying with twenty year-old men, see.) Anyway, the kids keep eating these cookies as if they're, you know, just "normal" cookies. Oh, I get the occasional query, "why is this batch so gooey?" or "why are these cookies so crunchy?" I just hide my little box of organic milled flax & whole grain oat flour and mumble something about humidity or lack thereof, and they eat them anyway!

This is what happens when we stop buying Oreos & Ben & Jerry's: the kids eat FLAX!

Now if I could just figure out how to get the sugar out of there without adding poisonous substitutes!

(I haven't blogged in a couple of days -- my excuse for blogging in your comments. Apologies!)

I'm very jealous about Venice. I'm dying to go.

Those two chicks up there kill me, heeeeeee.

Florence is this way for me. If I close my eyes and think real hard I can almost smell it too. Almost.
